Phone system update stuck — what to do
The progress bar hasn't moved in a while? In most cases it's nothing serious — just check a few things before you start to worry.
What to check
Check your WiFi connection
System updates download large files, so your phone works best on stable WiFi rather than mobile data. If the signal is weak, move closer to the router.
Plug your phone into the charger
Many phones deliberately slow down or pause an update when battery level is low, so it doesn't shut off mid-process. Plugging in often is enough to get it moving again.
Check that you have enough free storage
A system update needs a fair amount of free space for temporary files. If your phone's storage is nearly full, free up some space and try again.
Give it a bit of patience
Large updates can take anywhere from several minutes to nearly an hour, especially when the phone is installing extra components in the background. A screen that just says "Updating" without moving for a few minutes usually isn't a problem yet.
If it's truly stuck, do a safe restart
If the progress bar hasn't moved in a good while, hold the power button to restart the phone in the normal way. In most cases, the phone will either finish installing or roll back to the previous system version.
Why updates sometimes look frozen
System updates install in the background and can look like nothing is happening even while the phone is working hard. A genuine freeze is rare — usually a bit of patience and checking the conditions above is all it takes.
When it's a job for IT
- The phone won't turn on at all after restarting, or shows an error message.
- The update stays stuck for over an hour despite good WiFi, a charged battery, and free storage.
- It's a company phone where the install is required before you can keep working, and the deadline is tight.
