VPN won't connect — common causes and how to diagnose them
VPN is a separate connection with its own rules — so "the internet works" doesn't mean the VPN will too. Here are the most common causes and how to check them quickly.
What to check, step by step
Make sure the internet works at all
Open any website without the VPN. If the internet doesn't work, that's a network problem, and the VPN has no chance of connecting regardless of what you do in its settings.
Check whether your password expired
Many company systems force periodic password changes. If login fails without a clear error message, try the same password on another company system (like email) — if that fails too, it's the password, not the VPN itself.
Check your system date and time
VPNs rely on security certificates that are only valid within a specific time window. A wrong date on your computer (common after it's been unplugged for a while) can block a connection even though everything else is fine.
Try a different network
Hotel, café, and airport networks often block VPN traffic for security reasons. If the VPN connects fine from your home network but not a public one, that's not a problem on your end — it's a restriction of that network.
Check for VPN app updates
An outdated VPN client sometimes stops working after changes on the company server side. Check the app store or the vendor's site for a newer version.
Restart the whole computer, not just the VPN app
The drivers for the virtual network adapter the VPN uses can sometimes freeze up independently of the app itself. A full computer restart fixes it more often than just restarting the VPN client.
When it's a job for IT
- Login fails with a specific error message (like an account being locked, or a certificate error) — that usually needs action on the server side.
- The problem happens on every network, including home, despite an updated app and correct date.
- The VPN connects, but no company resources are visible — that's no longer a connection problem, but an access configuration one.
- More than one person is affected at the same time — possibly an outage on the company's VPN server side.
What's worth including in your report
The exact error message text (even a screenshot), the name of the network you're connecting from, and whether the problem also happens on a different network — these three details are usually enough to narrow the cause down remotely without extra back-and-forth.
