Software updates — why they matter for security

Every update you postpone is a gap that someone else already knows about. Here's how to approach updates so they don't get in the way of your work — but still do their job.

How to approach updates

1

Why delaying updates is risky

A security update usually patches a specific, already-known vulnerability. Publishing the fix also tells attackers exactly which older versions are still exposed — the longer you wait to install it, the longer you remain a target.

2

Update when it's convenient, not "never"

You don't have to click "install" in the middle of an important meeting. It's fine to put an update off until the end of the day or a break — but it's worth actually installing it afterward, instead of clicking "remind me later" for weeks.

3

Don't turn off notifications for good

Turning off update notifications "to stop the nagging" means you stop knowing when an important patch is available. It's better to reduce how often they appear than to block them entirely.

4

A restart is part of the update too

Many updates need a computer restart to actually take effect. An update that's downloaded but never finished with a restart doesn't protect you the way it should.

Where attacks on outdated software come from

Many well-known breaches didn't exploit newly discovered vulnerabilities at all — they used ones that had been known and patched for a long time, simply because nobody installed the fix in time. It's one of the simplest and cheapest forms of defense, since the fix is already available — all you have to do is install it.

When it's a job for IT

  • An app is asking you to update, and you're not sure whether it's a genuine system prompt or a fake one
  • Your computer hasn't installed any system updates in a long time
  • An update failed and the system has become unstable
  • The company wants to set consistent update rules across all workstations
