No sound or clipboard in remote access
Sound and clipboard sharing don't always work by default in a remote session — usually a single setting in the app is all that's needed.
What to check
Check the audio redirection setting
In apps like RDP or TeamViewer, sound from the target computer needs to be explicitly redirected to your device — look for an option like "play sound from remote computer" in the session settings.
Check that clipboard sharing is turned on
Copying text between your computer and the remote one requires clipboard sharing to be enabled — it's usually found in the app's settings, under the session or devices section.
Copy something short to test the clipboard
Instead of copying a large file or a long block of text right away, try copying a single word first — it's a quick way to confirm the clipboard is bridging between the two computers at all.
Restart the session if the settings are correct but it still doesn't work
Sometimes a change to sound or clipboard settings only takes effect after you close and reopen the session.
Why these features are sometimes off by default
Remote access vendors often restrict audio and clipboard forwarding by default because they use extra bandwidth and can carry some risk if used carelessly on an unfamiliar computer. Turning them on deliberately, only when they're actually needed, is safer than leaving them on permanently.
When it's a job for IT
- Audio and clipboard redirection are both enabled, and it still doesn't work
- Sound or clipboard used to work and stopped without any settings being changed
- You don't see that option at all in the settings of the app you're using
- The problem only happens when connecting to one specific computer
