macOS update stuck — what to do
The progress bar has been sitting in the same spot for fifteen minutes, and it's hard to tell whether anything is still happening or the Mac has simply frozen mid-update. Before you reach for the power button, check a few things first.
What to check
Check that the Mac is actually connected to the internet
macOS updates keep downloading data during installation, so weak or intermittent Wi-Fi can seriously slow the whole process down. If possible, plug the Mac in with an ethernet cable or move closer to the router.
Make sure there's enough free storage
Major system updates need several gigabytes of free space on the drive. If space ran out partway through installation, the process can stall midway and never move forward.
Give it real patience, especially around "almost done"
Major macOS updates can sit on a single progress bar for 20–30 minutes, especially right near the end — that's normal. If the screen isn't changing but the fan is still running, the system is likely still doing something in the background.
Only consider a restart after a genuinely long silence
If more than an hour has passed, the screen isn't changing, the fan has gone quiet, and the progress indicator hasn't moved at all, only then hold down the power button to force a shutdown. A forced restart mid-update carries real risk, so treat it as a genuine last resort.
Why it's worth not rushing
Interrupting a system update at the wrong moment can leave a Mac in an unstable state that's harder to recover from than simply waiting a while longer. Patience genuinely pays off here.
