Forgot your email password — how to reset it yourself
Many companies use mail systems (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) that come with a built-in, self-service password reset. Before you report it to IT, check whether your company uses it.
What to check, step by step
Look for a "Forgot password" link on the login page
If the company uses Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace with self-service reset enabled, a link will appear on the login page. Clicking it starts an identity verification process (an SMS code, or an email to a backup address).
Have your phone or backup email handy
Identity verification during a password reset usually requires access to a previously configured phone number or personal email. If you never set those up, self-service reset may not be available.
Set a new, unique password
Avoid a password you already use elsewhere. A password manager (built into your browser or a separate app) makes it easy to remember a unique, strong password without writing it on a sticky note.
When it's a job for IT
- The company doesn't have self-service reset enabled — only a mail system administrator can reset the password.
- You don't have access to the phone or backup address used for verification.
- The reset fails even though the verification details are correct.
If you're not sure whether your company offers self-service reset, that's one of those questions IT can answer fastest, rather than guessing.
